Audrey Hepburn will forever be known as a style and beauty icon, an endless source of inspiration for movie fans and beyond. Who can forget her little black dress (designed by Hubert de Givenchy) in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or her gown in Sabrina? Both on and off the screen, the Oscar-winning actor has shaped generations with her timeless fashion taste.
Hepburn is certainly a muse in any season, but the summer is one of her best. Think: Oversized sunglasses for a vacation in Antibes; wide-brimmed and unique hats for boat rides; and more. While filming Roman Holiday, she enjoyed gelato with Gregory Peck in a cinched-waist skirt, and during her free time with her husband, Mel Ferrer, she often sported gingham capris. Luckily, photos capture her range of looks throughout her youth.
A number of these snapshots were taken at the famed Bürgenstock Resort in Lucerne, Switzerland. The actor married Ferrer at the resort’s chapel in 1954 and went on to live at Villa Bethania, a house on the estate. In her later years, she moved to the Swiss town of Tolochenaz, where she lived in an 18th-century farmhouse named La Paisible that Vogue photographed for our 1961 issue. When she wasn’t on set or doing press in Hollywood, it seems she was playing golf, gardening, and enjoying the idyllic Swiss Alps.
